VIENNA - Youth members
at one local church are learning
first-hand about hunger and its
effects on the mind, body and
soul. The learning experience
occurred during a 30-hour fast-
ing at River Valley Community
Church in Vienna.
   Fourteen teen youth and three
advisers began at 3 p.m. Friday
and will continue to consume
nothing but water until 9 tonight
as part of World Vision Interna-
tional, an organization that feeds
children overseas who are hun-
gry, said Ken Fulton, youth
adviser.

participate in the "Can You Sur-
vive the Famine" at the River Val-
ley Community Church in Vienna.
For the third year. each child
in the Vienna church is to raise a
minimum of $30 for a 30-hour
fast because that is the amount
World Vision spends in feeding
one child for a month, Fulton
said.
   The youth spent Friday night
in cardboard boxes, supplied by
Modem Maytag, in the unheated
gym as their home and had few
belongings.
The 30 hours are filled with
Bible lessons, prayer and games
aimed at teaching about the
homeless and hungry. The teens,
advisers and four other adults
i will be going today to watch the
' movie, "The Passion of the
Christ," as an extra devotional
time.
   Throughout the evening if a
member of the fast felt a hunger
pain, he or she was to pray for the
child being sponsored. At mid-
night a worship service had the
youths praying for the 29,000
who died around the world dur-
ing their 30 hours of fast
   After the worship service, the
youth began 29,000 seconds of
their fast in silence to think about
those in hunger who have died.
   "We will be playing Survivor-
type games throughout the 30
hours in which team members
will take choices of countries to
interact and sec if they can sur-
vive or die in the country." said
Jeff Edman, youth leader. "The
kids don't know it yet, bill four of
the countries automatically lead
to death."
The youlh went to 100 houses
in the area today with fliers ask-
ing neighbors to put canned food
on their porches today if they'd
like to alleviate hunger. Fulton
said. The food will be collected
today. The kids will do some
painting around the church as
well.
The youth brought a few pos-
sessions with them in the form of
a stuffed animal or extra cloth-
ing. This is more than some
youth have in other countries,
Edman said. "We plan on having
them place these little extras in a
line sometime during the event
and little by little we will take
those away from them," he said
.
