The
Internet
|
|
The
Internet is a global network of
interconnected computers and
networks of computers.
Through this network, users can
share various types of
information. Typically, a
computer connected to the
Internet can copy information to
and from literally millions of
servers and other
computers. Much of the
information available on the
internet consists of
inter-linked documents and other
resources of the World Wide Web
(WWW) generally accessed by a
program called a web
browser. Other programs
provide for electronic mail
(email), online chat, instant
messaging, file transfers, and
file sharing.

| World
Wide Web (WWW) |
|
When
most people refer to
the Internet, they are
really speaking about
the World Wide Web
(WWW). The WWW
is a collection of
websites consisting of
pages containing text,
images, videos, and
other media that are
interconnected using
hyperlinks. Through
the use of a Web
Browser, users can
view web pages and
navigate from website
to website and page to
page by clicking on
hyperlinks. A
hyperlink is a
reference on a web
page that is
highlighted or in some
way visually
identified and when
"clicked"
automatically shows
another web page or
changes the existing
page to show related
information. |

| Email |
| |
Email
is electronically
sending messages from
one person to another
and predates the
Internet. Many
people relate the
concept of Email to
mailing a letter, but
is, in reality, more
analogous to mailing a
post card.
Between the sender and
the recipient, most
Internet Email will
reside or be backed
up, unencrypted, on
many networks and
machines not
controlled by either
party. If
someone with access to
one of these machines
feels it important
enough, they could
read or alter these
messages although with
the millions of emails
sent each day, it is
highly unlikely that
someone will intercept
and read your email. |

Instant
Messaging (IM) |
|
IM (Instant Messaging) is commonly used by
many Internet users and is not limited to
young people. It is used
for personal communication but
more and more businesses are
using IM. MORE |
